MENTOR MARSH EAGLES RETURN, SAFE AND SOUND, 2013

_DSC4707Photo taken yesterday of Marsh eagle keeping—what else?–an eagle-eye on its aerie a couple of trees south of him.

All’s well with the pair of eagles who’ve adopted the Mentor Marsh as their nursery, which soon may became actively occupied—Marsh Naturalist, Becky Donaldson, saw them copulating a couple weeks ago.

Becky will lead 4 hikes next month; registration and location information is below.

Upcoming Sunday hike/programs.  All four programs will likely scope out the Bald Eagle nest. All programs meet at the Marsh house at 2:00 pm.

April 14 Vernal pool hike;

April 21 Migratory bird hike (Bald Eagle);

MENTOR MARSH: PHOTO OF MENTOR MARSH EAGLET

The adult Marsh Bald Eagles standing guard in adjacent trees over their young

An eaglet making a brief appearance on a branch just above the left side of the nest

Becky Donaldson, Mentor Marsh Naturalist, and I studied several photos taken before and after the above.  There was nothing in those photos in the spot between the two branches, one slender, the other thicker, curving to the left on the left side of the nest.

As the camera was on a tripod, if anything moved, it had to be something in the nest.

The eaglet’s beak is pointing to the left, almost touching the slender branch.  Perhaps as it ventures further away from the nest, we’ll get a better view of him.

A bug’s eye-view of a Broad-winged Skipper on a Cone Flower in the Marsh’s rain garden

The Broad-winged Skipper is found in marshy areas where it lays its eggs on Phragmites (Common Reed).  After emerging from the eggs, the young caterpillars eat the leaves of the plant.  (I wish they’d eat the entire miserable, invasive thing.)

A tiny Midland Painted Turtle basking on a log

Except for soft-shelled turtles, the sex of a hatchling turtle is determined by the surrounding air temperature.  Snapping Turtle eggs at a temperature of 77 degrees F are male, are female if the temperature is either higher or lower.

Where a clutch of turtle eggs is laid in several layers, the warmer eggs at the top produce females, and the lower layers produce males.

MENTOR MARSH: MENTOR MARSH EAGLET OUT OF NEST!

Public Domain Photo of Eaglet

From Becky Donaldson, Mentor Marsh Naturalist

I posted the text below on our Marsh Facebook this afternoon…if you want to see the eaglet, come along on our Sunday hike!

Have you seen the eaglet lately? I had a chance to swing by the nest this morning and saw it in the nest tree, in a branch a bit above the nest. It looks like it is hopping or “practicing flying” since it was up and out of the nest.

Go eaglet!

We’ll take our “seasonal venture” hike down the Zimmerman Trail with the scope to see if we can spot it on our upcoming Sunday hike. Hope you can come along!

Meet at 2 p.m. at the Mentor Marsh Nature Center this Sunday, July 8.

MENTOR MARSH BALD EAGLE POSING IN NEST FOR TODAY’S 3RD ANNUAL BALD EAGLE FESTIVAL

The first several pictures I snapped were of the back of the eagle’s head.

Then I guess he got in touch with his inner majesty and gave me a profile shot.

Congrats to Becky Donaldson and the many naturalists, Marsh Board members and volunteers for making this an exciting and inspiring event.

There’s always something good going on at Mentor Marsh.

Try it.  You’ll like it.

Musings from the Marsh   Where did this winter go? Is it because there are so many fun, worthwhile & interesting events and programs planned at the Nature Center this spring & summer? It’s likely!

Mark your calendars & join in our larger environmental community with upcoming Marsh events:

∗         Build a rain barrel with us on April 21. Capture roof water before it runs out to your local waterway. Using rain barrel water to water around your yard saves you a little money when watering in the dry months ahead. Also see newly decorated rain barrels on display at the Nature Center-courtesy of two Mentor Elementary Schools.

∗         Marsh stewardship opportunities: Marsh Monitor with us, join our Garlic Mustard Pull on Saturday, May 5 and/or help us spruce up our stretch of the Buckeye Trail on National Trails Day on June 3.

Marsh News and Views   As spring continues to tease us here in Northeast Ohio, many beautiful thoughts of warmer weather and emerging life come to mind. This past winter has been mild, and sometimes I’ve had to check the calendar to remember that it still wasn’t over. The position of the sun in the sky as it passes over is really the only thing that remains constant to give us our shorter days and winter. As far as the sun goes, we have definitely seen a lot more of it this year as well.

For plants and wildlife, many different environmental triggers govern their behavior. With this mild winter, many creatures have been active in times when they are normally dormant. You may have seen chipmunks out and about through much of the season, or even heard spring peepers on a warmer day. Some trees’ buds have been just dying to burst. I even saw skunk cabbage in bloom in mid-January!

Most plants, insects and amphibians (frogs and salamanders) are waiting for the right weather conditions to begin life once again in spring. This means warmer temperatures and/or rain. The ground and vernal pools in which amphibians breed will then start to thaw out. Reptiles need warm temperatures and sun since they are cold-blooded and will typically come out later than some amphibians.

Mammals can go in and out of dormancy depending on the weather. Migratory birds are interesting because they undergo hormonal changes when there is more daylight in the Northern hemisphere, and this triggers them to come North to their breeding grounds, molt into breeding plumage, and begin singing to us while looking for their summer homes where they will raise the next generation.

All of these occurrences and phenomena in spring are exciting as the chain of natural events unfold. Despite the domination by phragmites (giant reed grass) in Mentor Marsh, the area still manages an amazing diversity of flora and fauna. The two biggest problems for biodiversity are the salt concentration in the Marsh that enabled the phragmites to take over, and the extreme overpopulation of white-tailed deer that eat mostly EVERYTHING.

Despite these two problems, there is plenty of hope for the recovery of habitats here, and there is much to see. Sign up for a Sunday hike with us and learn more about our diverse swamp forest habitat, the history of the Marsh, and seasonal wonders that occur here every year. Many raptors (including our resident bald eagles!) are exhibiting nesting behavior right now, and other birds are courting as well. Mole salamanders have made their way to the woodland pools to breed, and early migratory birds are arriving.

The chain of events that brings us into spring has already begun, so I hope that you come out and enjoy these beautiful spectacles— either on your own or on a guided Sunday hike with us!              –Doug Marcum, Naturalist
