The Eagle Owl stands 2 to 2 ½ feet tall and has a wingspan of 5 to 5 ½ feet. It weighs in at 4 to 5 ½ pounds, with some females weighing close to 7 pounds. For comparison, our more docile Barn Owl weighs a mere 1.1 pounds.
The talons of the ferocious Eagle Owl are longer than a leopard’s claws. It takes any prey not larger than itself, though it’s been known to take small roe deer. I suspect its enormous, orange eyes could turn any prey to jelly even before the talons strike.
Below is a URL showing a video of the bird flying, at 1000 frames per second, at a camera. If the Eagle Owl’s eyes don’t hypnotize or paralyze you, enjoy the beauty of its wings in flight and as it prepares to land. My thanks to Sylvia Jane for sending me the video.
